The view from my kitchen counter

I can’t get enough of summer fruit. Melons, berries, peaches, nectarines – love them all. That’s why I felt so sorry for the young checker at Safeway who sold me these blueberries. “How can you eat them?” she said. “Too bitter for me, I only like them with lots of powdered sugar.”  Maybe she’s never picked blueberries right off the vine, or eaten them in the peak of the season. The ones she sold me aren’t bitter at all.

Blueberries and more

It makes me sad to think that many people probably grow up only eating factory farmed fruits that are genetically engineered for travel, not for taste. I won’t even get into the differences between a tomato right off the vine, and the one you find on your burger at a fast food restaurant.

I’m one of those people who stops whenever I see a sign by the road that says “U Pick…” anything. We’ve picked peaches, raspberries, apples, and of course, blueberries. Not just in Arizona, of course. It’s a great pitstop on a road trip with kids, delicious and healthy at the same time.
